Events committee

by tedsmith » Fri Dec 20, 2013 2:38 pm

Yesterday we had the first meeting of the VCBC events committee. While it was a small group, everyone was enthusiastic about the various social events we can create.

We are going to make a small handout for the members to fill out about what kinds of events they are interested in and what times of the week they are available. Eventually we should be able to develop all sorts of social events that bring club members to together in ways that enhance their lives and improve the club's services.

This committee has no budget allocated to it from the board so all of its activities need to be free or paid for by members by either fundraising or paying themselves. For example, we may have a movie night to watch a new release where people attending would be expected to pay their own way but it would be fun to see a feature film as a group.

Some of the events will be monthly while some just once a year. A good example of a fun annual event we will likely try this summer is a weekend campout at Goldstream Park where they have a group site we could rent. A good example of a monthly event we would like to start is a musical jam night but we need a good location to do that. With so many members, the VCBC has the potential to host a wide variety of events but we do not want to go to far too fast.

Our first activity should prove to be one of the best annual events we come up with: A day at the BC Museum on Mon Jan 6. Every year the museum opens its doors by donation for a few days and we want to go as a group. We will start wandering though the museum at 1 pm and likely gather near the totem poles at 4:20. Bring your friends and family as this should be a lot of fun for everyone.

Another fun annual event next month is the VCBC 18th anniversary potluck. Held on Sun Jan 19 at the club, this event starts at 6pm and goes until about 11pm. Members can bring a date but beware the place can get a little smokey.

On Thurs Jan 23 we are going to host our first monthly games night at the VCBC. Starting at 7pm, we will be playing a variety of board and card games until about 10pm.

Finally on Tues Jan 28 we will be hosting our first monthly afternoon walk in the park. The first walk will be through Finnerty Gardens at the University of Victoria. Since so few people know where that is, the group will meet at the bus depot at 1pm and walk to the gardens from there. Hopefully the weather will be nice and everyone can stay out for a few hours.

Anyone interested in helping plan more events is welcome to attend the next meeting of the events committee on Thurs Jan 16 at 5 pm in the atrium of the BC Ferries building across the street form the club.
